In July 2029, Toulouse will host the 26th edition of the ICCM, the world\u2019s largest conference dedicated to composite materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement was made official during the 2025 edition in Baltimore in early August: the \u2018Pink City\u2019 has been awarded the right to host this major international event, which will bring together nearly 1,600 researchers, engineers, industry representatives and decision-makers at the MEETT. A prestigious victory that confirms Toulouse\u2019s scientific and academic influence on the global stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Led by a consortium comprising the University of Toulouse, the Institut Mines Telecom d\u2019Albi (acting as supervisors of the CNRS-Institut Cl\u00e9ment Ader Joint Research Unit), the IRT Saint Exup\u00e9ry, Toulouse Team and Toulouse Events (the MEETT\u2019s manager), the French bid succeeded in convincing the several thousand members of the international learned society gathered in Baltimore, USA, by highlighting the expertise of local research, the strength of the aerospace ecosystem, and the quality of the host facilities. Securing such a congress would not have been possible without the unwavering commitment of the local scientific team, which spearheaded this bid with the support and expertise of the teams at Toulouse Team and MEETT (Toulouse Events), as well as the backing of institutional bodies (Toulouse M\u00e9tropole, the Occitanie Region) and regional industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

ICCM (International Conference on Composite Materials)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every two years, the ICCM (International Conference on Composite Materials) is the key event for exploring scientific advances and industrial applications in the field of composite materials. The conference alternates between continents every two years and will return to Europe in July 2029 in Toulouse, which will thus become the global capital of innovation in this strategic field, at the crossroads of research and industry. The composites industry in France and Toulouse
In France, the composites industry is a strategic sector, driven by the aerospace, automotive and energy sectors. It relies on major groups such as Airbus, Safran and Daher, but also on a dense network of innovative SMEs and technical centres. Composites have become essential for reducing the weight of structures and improving performance, as demonstrated by the Airbus A350, in which more than 50% of the airframe is made of composite materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The composites industry in France and Toulouse<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In France, the composites industry is a strategic sector, driven by the aerospace, automotive and energy industries. It relies on major groups such as Airbus, Safran and Daher, as well as a dense network of innovative SMEs and technical centres. Composites have become essential for reducing the weight of structures and improving performance, as demonstrated by the Airbus A350, in which more than 50% of the airframe is made of composite materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Toulouse region is a prime example of this dynamic. Toulouse is home not only to Airbus\u2019s headquarters and main assembly lines, but also to a dense network of suppliers, subcontractors and design offices. The Aerospace Valley cluster brings these players together by fostering collaborative projects and innovation. It is home to SMEs specialising in manufacturing processes, tooling and design, as well as leading research centres. The Institut Cl\u00e9ment Ader (UMR 5312, University of Toulouse, IMT Mines Albi, INSA Toulouse, ISAE-Supa\u00e9ro, CNRS) is a prime example of this link between research and industry. Its teams are working on understanding the behaviour of composites, their machining, multi-scale modelling and innovative processes. The IRT Saint Exup\u00e9ry complements this framework. This technological research institute leads collaborative projects bringing together industry and academia on advanced materials, particularly in the areas of sustainability, automated processing and integration into complex structures. It plays a crucial role as a bridge between laboratories and businesses to accelerate technology transfer to industry. The current challenges are both technological and environmental. From an industrial perspective, the automation of processes (fibre placement, infusion, thermoforming) is essential to meet Airbus\u2019s increasing production rates and reduce production costs. From an environmental perspective, the sector is turning to thermoplastic composites, which are more easily recyclable, as well as bio-based fibres and processes that limit the carbon footprint. These developments are essential to align the sector with European decarbonisation targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toulouse is thus positioning itself as a leading European hub for composite materials, thanks to the unique collaboration between major contractors, academic research and innovative SMEs. This structure enables the region to simultaneously address the challenges of ramping up production and sustainability, and places it at the heart of the industrial transition towards a more competitive and environmentally friendly aerospace sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The choice of Toulouse and the MEETT to host the ICCM World Conference in 2029 confirms the venue\u2019s stature and appeal on the global stage. The Cl\u00e9ment Ader Institute<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cl\u00e9ment Ader Institute (ICA \u2013 UMR CNRS 5312) is a research laboratory, established in 2009, bringing together 260 staff working primarily in the field of Solid Mechanics, covering Materials, Structures, Systems, as well as Processes, Measurement, Control and Monitoring. The targeted applications are primarily in the aerospace sector, but also in transport in the broadest sense, energy, and finally the mechanical engineering industries. Its activities focus on modelling the behaviour of materials and structures, and studying their durability. It strives to cover theoretical, numerical and experimental approaches in a balanced manner. A significant part of its research relates to composite materials, which are now indispensable in the aerospace sector. Its five supervisory institutions are INSA Toulouse, ISAE-SUPAERO, the University of Toulouse, IMT Mines Albi and the CNRS. ica.cnrs.fr<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the field of composites, the ICA has 30 permanent research lecturers, nearly 45 PhD students, 10 postdoctoral researchers and project engineers. The Composite Materials and Structures (MSC) group is organised around two research areas: Materials, Processes and Properties (MaPP) and Structures, Impact, Modelling and Machining (SIMU). The MSC group\u2019s work focuses on the study of composite materials and structures at various stages of their life cycle: development, manufacturing and machining, in-service behaviour, repair, reuse and recycling. The group\u2019s approach has always been based primarily on the interplay between numerical simulation (including digital twins) and experimentation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

IRT Saint Exup\u00e9ry is a technology research institute that brings together academic and industrial partners around collaborative projects to boost competitiveness and innovation in the aeronautics, space and embedded systems sectors. In the field of composites, its teams contribute to the development of lighter, stronger and multi-functional structures by designing and manufacturing innovative composite materials with controlled architecture, up to a semi-industrial scale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
